Faculty Academy and Mentorship Initiative of Maryland - Intro

Salisbury University School of Nursing

The Introductory Academy is a 40 contact-hour online program to prepare nurse clinicians for roles as clinical faculty. Topics include the clinical faculty role, legal aspects of clinical teaching, principles of teaching/learning, structuring clinical experiences, managing challenging student behaviors, providing constructive feedback, and evaluating student performance. Participants engage in simulations depicting common, “real-life” clinical teaching encounters. Group and individual mentoring activities are arranged thereafter. CEUs from the Maryland Nurses Association are awarded.

The Advanced Academy is a 40 contact-hour online program that provides nurse clinicians with additional theoretical and practical background for roles as clinical faculty. Topics include learning theories and contemporary students, domains of learning, strategies to translate classroom to clinical learning, models of clinical conferencing, student assessment and evaluation, and professional development as a faculty member. Participants engage in simulations depicting common, “real-life” clinical teaching encounters. Group and individual mentoring activities are arranged thereafter. CEUs from the Maryland Nurses Association are pending.

Clinical Faculty Workshop

Nurse Educator Institute, University of Maryland, School of Nursing

This 2-day workshop provides foundational information for nurses who are planning to seek, or have recently accepted, positions as faculty teaching nursing students in clinical settings. Content includes: development of a philosophy of clinical teaching, teaching strategies, student assessment and evaluation, and legal and ethical aspects of the clinical instructor role. Hands-on opportunities to apply what is learned with live “standardized students”. CEUs provided for a fee.

Cohen Scholars

The Nurse Support Program II (NSP II) provides funding for Cohen Scholars to complete graduate degrees (MS, MSN, DNP, PhD, EdD) and core education coursework, including post-master's teaching certificates, necessary to prepare to become a nurse educator, nurse faculty or clinical educator in one of Maryland’s nursing degree programs or healthcare organizations. Participating Maryland institutions with nursing degree programs may nominate a limited number of new Cohen Scholars each academic year. Scholarship recipients have a service obligation to teach. For each academic year, or portion thereof, that funding is received, recipients are expected to work one year as a full-time nurse faculty member/hospital educator/ approved educational role in Maryland.

Nursing Clinician to Educator (no longer active)

Towson University Department of Nursing

The Clinician to Educator course provides clinical faculty with the foundational education that is necessary to teach in the classroom. This 35-contact hour workshop focuses on conceptual knowledge necessary for the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing courses in academic settings. Learners will explore legal issues, curriculum development, teaching/learning strategies and program accreditation related to classroom education.
